So...

So I was rewatching the first season of The 100 after the S5 finale, and I’m starting to notice something interesting. I think, Kane doesn’t hate Octavia, because she threw him into the fighting pit. I think, he realizes that the creation of Blodreina was his fault. 

Let’s take a look at the first season, shall we? 

Councilman Kane is very similar to Blodreina.

Both of them think, that the survival of the human race rests on their shoulders.They were both facing a critical situation. In Marcus’s case, they were short on air. In Octavia’s case they were short on food. Both of these things are indispensable for life. 

Kane’s already had a law to cling into, so he, in a way could lessen his own guilt by hiding behind somebody else’s words. Osleya didn’t have that. She needed to make her own laws and through them become Blodreina in order to keep everyone alive. 

They knew that the only way to buy time was population control. On the Ark, they floated people for EVERY SINGLE CRIME. Do you know wthat that means? How horrible is to die in space? It takes almost a minute in complete agony. Nobody stood a chance. Every single death bought Marcus a few more hours, a few more days to find a way and ensure the survival of our race. 

Now, I know that the fighting pit looks awful, but just think about it. If you commit a crime and get thrown in there, let’s say with three other people, your chance of survival is 25%. You know what 25% is? Higher than 0%. And even if you die at least it’s a quick death and you KNOW that you will help your friens and family live another day. The people who were floated thought, that they were killed for crimes like STEALING JUST A FEW BITES OF FOOD FOR THE SICK (Or in Octavias case, being born at all.)

But I’m getting off topic. Do you remember, what Kane told Blodreina in 5x02?

“Strength without mercy is nothing.”

Do you know what Kane said in the Pilot, when he thought that he HAD to be the bad guy in order to save the human race?

“We can’t afford mercy”

In the same scene he said: “You all think I’m the bad guy, but I’m the only one who’s willing to do what it takes to save us.”

Kane KNOWS what Octavia’s is doing. He KNOWS that Ocatvia is making herself the bad guy, taking away their coices, sucking it up so they don’t have to. She bears it so they don’t have to. And Kane knows it will be a Pyrrhic Victory, because NO ONE can come back from that, Kane is haunted by his decisions to this very day.

I personally think that Blodreina is Kane’s own personal nightmare. Everything he was and could have been if the situation on the Ark was more dire. He knews that the grounders culturde DOES NOT allow a weak leader, it DOES NOT allow forgive-and-forget, there is no place for democracy. No matter what Octavia mgith have wanted, “Blood must have blood” was their way for a hundred years. It can not be forgotten that easily and Octavia knew that too. She had to give them something to turn their violent tendencies and desperation to, and the fighting pit became just that. 

Kane knows, that if the people become hungry, if they are in pain, they turn into monsters that no commander, chancellor or queen can command. They have to take control before anarchy hits and Blodreina was just that, Cooper’s rebellion only cemented Octavia’s power.

Kane knows all of this. He calls Octavia the Devil, not because he sees her as someone evil, but because Blodreina is his nightmare. The Red Queen could have been his future, and he can’t take that. He hates Blodreina, because she reminds her not only his past mistakes, but his inability to do it again. That he is so haunted by his past that he had to allow a TEENAGER to shoulder every blame that these unspeakable things brought with themselves. 

I think, Kane wanted to help Octavia. I think, he hated himself, because he was unable to give her a better solution.
